A Lancashire PR boss has told public relations students that strong writing skills can make or break their careers.
Angela Smith, managing director of The Write Angle, who has more than 25 years of experience in public relations and marketing, joined final year students for a guest lecture on the module PR 3101 Public Relations consultancy. Angela presented a case study on her agency’s successful work during Preston Guild 2012 and passed on tips about the qualities employers are looking for in PR graduates.
She said: “Excellent writing skills are a deal breaker for young people applying for PR jobs. It is a number one skill to have for PR graduates. We look for hard working candidates with impressive communication skills who are naturally well organised and have a passionate interest in the media, news and current events.”
Angela added: “A placement degree is also a very good idea to gain work experience. A year in the industry helps students’ CVs. As an employer, I want the graduate to have experience, know the basics of the PR work day and hit the ground running.”
